Given the highway E-rated tired inflated to 60 and 80 psi, she did pretty well actually, made it up almost everything in 2wd and a little momentum. I also did fairly well finding trails to go on, I guess going to college near rednecks and national forests has its advantages. I didnt even go past any no trespassing signs. Ill fix the Kinja’d Photos a little later, and maybe add some Google tracks maps I made.

Kinja'd!!!

I only almost ripped of the air damn and foglights like 4 times. A pack of plastic fasteners and a new foglight bulb from autozone and a bunch of zipties later, I actually got the thing back where it should be after

Kinja'd!!!

These are the tires i have, with equivalent amount of wear.

Kinja'd!!!

I started out at like 6 am, which made the Hella’s very useful. Getting her turned around on dead ends was mo picnic, with turns approaching 8-15 back and forths, but I managed. I only had to back out once, which wasnt too bad.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Had to get a flex pic of course

If your wondering, Red is above average speed, blue is about average, green is below, so you can tell where i hit a dead end and had to turn around. App is called Google Tracks.

The one aggravation I had about the part of Connecticut where I resided was the distinct lack of nearby trails. Looks like you found a decent one!

Nice ‘OPPO’ sticker above the GMC emblem.

I know, the nearest gokarting place is in canada (indoor gas, wooooo)

The best part the drinking age is 18 in Montreal. So karting first, then St. Catherine St.

Having fun? They worked pretty well honestly. I dont know why people need to drop thousands of dollars on tires and lift kits, I didnt get stuck once. That said I wasn’t dune jumping, or muddin’ and was pretty careful about my lines. On dirt roads i get so little traction, and the wheel base is so long, that hecktik skids are super easy and predictable. Dont worry i have good winter tires for when it snows

Haha, wow. How much do these tiny tread highway guys cost?

We only paid $145 a tire for some BEEFY Cooper Discoverer’s this summer.

I wish we had trails near us. Closest actual trail (that’s legal) is probably about 4 hours away

But what load range are they? These are good for the full weight a 2500hd can take.

Seriously? I don’t see any pictures that would really indicate even a need to use 4wd. I might engage 4wd just to get oil moving in the transfer case, it is a good road for that, but not much that requires 4wd. At best that embankment in the first picture might be good to have 4wd in reserve if he tried to drive up it. Pretty much all other pictures looks like a car could drive it without an issue.

My question is why does he have his tires inflated so high? Even when hauling a heavy load I a rarely have them inflated above 55 or 60psi. Empty I am typically around 40psi. If I was expecting some difficult terrain I’d likely air down to 30psi for added traction, and if I really needed it I might air way down to 15 or 20psi. Again nothing there appears to need the extra traction.

Looks like a gorgeous drive, love getting out into the country side like that. Certainly a great time of year to get off pavement.

“...inflated to 60 and 80 psi”

Why?! That’s not only crazy high I think that’s probably well above the recommended max for those tires.

Whoa chill out there buddy.

I wasn’t saying he was out in deep mud or something, just that with the lights and the post it seems like he’s a guy who likes to be off-pavement, which maybe not in this scenario, but down the line might be really useful to have some A/T’s.

Also, I agree 100% on the pressure thing, that’s high.

I just met some engineering dudes from Potsdam I talk about in my last post. Driving amongst that wilderness is almost worth the 5ish hour drive from the southern tier for me. Rented a cabin for a bachelor weekend last year twas fantastic.

Kinja'd!!!1

Probably not. It’s a 2500, so they’re probably E-rated tires and it’s probably the recommended pressures on the door. My truck’s only a half ton and I run 55 psi in my tires. E-rated tires are 10-ply and max inflation pressure is usually 80 psi.

Kinja'd!!! HammerheadFistpunch > BigBlock440
10/19/2015 at 13:45

Kinja'd!!!0

My d-Tracs are E rated and they top out at 80, but still, 80 psi!? that’s nutty. The highest they’ve ever been is 45 and thats fully loaded pulling a trailer. This truck empty can’t weight more than my fully loaded trailer pullin’ 80 does.

My GM 2500HD has those as recommended pressures. Of course, you’d be insane to have 80psi on the rear axle unless you were hauling an actual load.

10/19/2015 at 13:56

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah I figured you would max out at 80 for a heavy load but dry? that’s gotta be harsh. I run my e rated at 32, of course its a much “lighter” truck at only 5500 lbs.

Kinja'd!!! BigBlock440 > HammerheadFistpunch
10/19/2015 at 13:58

Kinja'd!!!0

A little googling shows that’s what the door says to put them at (55-60 for the front, 80 for the rears). I don’t know what he uses the truck for or how often they need to be 80, but some people don’t like messing around with it. It’s a 3/4 ton truck, so it’s going to ride rougher anyway, is the slightly smoother ride worth messing around with the pressures every time you tow or haul something heavy? I guess that’s up to the end user. Those pressures are pretty common for HD trucks though, Semi tires are even higher, over 100 psi for some tires. Putting air in them always makes me a bit nervous.

I think I am at about 40psi. Not that I’m putting a ton of weight in the bed.

But I can confirm most of the “I’m going to offroad this stock pick up truck”. The Eaton gov-bomb differential (G80) is surprisingly capable.

Yeah i should probably lower that rear pressure

But yes that is what it says on the door, an d i haven’t really had weird rear tire wear. Plus I need all the MPG help i can get.

Well I didn’t take pictures of the roughest stuff, cause I was too busy wheeling in it.

The ground was pretty hard cause it was 28 degrees most of the day, but there were a few places, especially going up some steep hills covered with wet frosty leaves, or there was a few spots I wanted to go slow through and not rely on momentum (I needed to drive the rest of the time too). I did have to go through some deeper mud, but since I didnt have enough traction to stay out of the ruts, judicious throttle, momentum and 4wd got me through. Id say 80% of the stuff I did you could do in a Subaru.

Next time I’ll get pictures of the tougher stuff to appease you buggers.

60 and 80 psi are what it says on the doors for e rated tires, and I probably will lower the rears, but I really do need all the MPG help I can get.

I get ~12.5 on my drive up and down from school. :(

Though one time on a drive to a dyno day with my schools car club, with the truck in third or second the whole time so I could keep up with all the modified subarus, I got 7. It was a good day. I made more power stock then any of the other cars did with all their turbos, except for one BMW.
